A Funny Thing Happened to Me on the Way to Today

How creationism affected my life.

I have already written about my experiences in dealing with my diagnosis of gluten intolerance. There is, however, another bit of information that may be of interest to others.

My problem came into focus after a hernia operation at which time I was given an oral antibiotic. The way that this fits into the story is the purpose of this article.

I had previously taught an introductory level class on the fact of Divine Creation  to small groups in my church. One of the main topics was the existence of symbiotic relationships in nature. My main example was that “the termite eats wood, but the termite cannot digest wood. Living within the intestine of the termite is a completely different organism that digests the wood for the benefit of itself and the termite.”  How can anyone be expected to believe that this “just happened”. The importance of this came home to me later.

After my hernia operation, the surgeon explained to me that I needed to lose weight. A bit of abdominal fat had contributed to the hernia.

Like a good patient, I set about the task of losing weight, but with disastrous consequences. I went on a fish and fowl diet which was in vogue at the time. The pounds started coming off, and the results were so dramatic that I was thrilled. But there were disastrous consequences. Those consequences led to my gluten intolerance diagnosis. I became so weak and malnourished that my family physician insisted on giving me two units of whole blood.

Now let me tie the above facts together. The first thing that came on the market that would help restore the beneficial biological organisms destroyed by the antibiotic was a product called Activia® . Some time later I discovered probiotic cottage cheese in the dairy case of my local supermarket. Still later the Phillips pharmaceutical company came out with another probiotic called Colon Health® , which I have found to be the most acceptable way to maintain the proper balance of beneficial bacteria within my alimentary canal.

Another thing happened in concert with the above. I have come to learn that a balance of biological and fungal life within the human body is good. After the oral antibiotic, I was plagued with fungal infections of my toenails. I was then given an oral antifungal. This was good at the time and under the circumstances. But it raised an important creationist question. Medical science has bought into evolution for over one hundred years. They have treated many things as left over from some long ago ancestry of today’s man and therefore not needed. How many people have been the victim of malpractice brought about by the acceptance of evolution as fact? How many have died an early death? How long before medical science will wake up?
